About the Koventareios Municipal Library

About the Koventareios Municipal Library

The Koventareios Municipal Library grew from Kozani’s educational and scholarly traditions, with early roots tied to the School of Kozani, established in the late 17th century. Georgios (Gregory) Kontaris taught at the school from 1676 to 1679, and the library’s early history is connected to his work.

Kozani merchants and scholars living in Central Europe helped build the collections through donations. Today, the holdings include more than 102,000 books, 421 manuscripts, 361 document codices and 140,000 loose documents, alongside a digital collection of more than 1,000,000 pages.

The manuscripts include items dating back to 1022. Early printed works range from 1494 to 1912, including seven incunabula dating from 1494 to 1500. The map collection features the 12-page Charta by Rigas Velestinlis, dated 1796–1797, and a four-page world map by Anthimos Gazis, dated 1800.

Other historical holdings include an archaeological collection, photographs, the Psarianos library and a local historical archive. If you are planning a wider cultural day, the Archaeological Museum of Kozani visitor guide covers another local collection.
